A lecture by Michael J. Abramowitz, President of Freedom House, will open the 2018 Freedom Games

We invite you to a lecture by Michael J. Abramowitz, president of Freedom House on “Freedom of speech: history and future”, which will open the 2018 Freedom Games.

Freedom House was founded in 1941 by Wendell Wilkie and Eleanor Roosevelt. Based in New York, it is one of the world’s largest non-governmental organizations dealing with manifestations of the violation of democracy in the world.

Freedom House prepares annual “Freedom in the World” reports about the state of democracy and freedom in all countries. The report is the result of monitoring changes in the respect for and protection of political rights by state authorities (freedom of activity of competitive political parties, free elections) and civil liberties (religious, ethnic, economic, language, women’s and family rights, personal freedoms, freedom of the press, beliefs and associations) ). The rights and freedoms studied are largely taken from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations. The latest report is available here: https://freedomhouse.org/report-types/freedom-world

Freedom House also prepares annual “Freedom of the Press” reports on the freedom of the press in the world. The latest report is available here: https://freedomhouse.org/report-types/freedom-press
More about the organization can be found here: https://freedomhouse.org/

Before joining Freedom House in February 2017, Michael J. Abramowitz was director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Levine Institute for Holocaust Education. He led the museum’s genocide prevention efforts and later oversaw its public education programs.

He was previously National Editor and then White House correspondent for the Washington Post.  He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and former fellow at the German Marshall Fund and the Hoover Institution. A graduate of Harvard College, he is also a board member of the National Security Archive.
